Memory Verse: Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Weekly Proverb: Proverbs 12:23

Proverbs 12:23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

Introduction: The memory verse is a prophecy of the coming Messiah, His future kingdom on earth, the new Jerusalem, and Jesus's worldwide authority. The three titles above, from the memory verse, are also demonstrated in a type, in the book of Judges, by an angel of God.

Q 1. An angel appears to Manoah's wife. He tells the barren woman that she will conceive and bear a child; then gives her some good advice that she should follow during the pregnancy. What is a title given to a person that gives good advice? Judges 13:3, 4, 7, 8, 12-14

Answer: Counselor.

Judges 13:3 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

Judges 13:4 Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:

Judges 13:7 But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

Judges 13:8 Then Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.

Judges 13:12 And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?

Judges 13:13 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.

Judges 13:14 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.

Q 2. The angel is described as "very terrible". The word terrible, as it is used in various scriptures, means to inspire fear. Deuteronomy 7:21, Deuteronomy 10:17, 21, Nehemiah 4:14, Psalms 47:2. In Judges 13, think of the word as meaning, prepared for war, or as a warrior. What is a title given to a terrible warrior? Judges 13:6

Answer: Mighty.

Judges 13:6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:

Q 3. Manoah wants to know the angel's name. The angel says that his name is "secret". If you have a KJV Bible with a margin, notice that the margin interprets secret as wonderful. The angel is using a double entendre to say that his name is wonderful. The angel even performs some wonderful acts for the two spectators. What is the perfect name for an angel that performs wondrously? Judges 13:17-20

Answer: Wonderful.

Judges 13:17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour?

Judges 13:18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?

Judges 13:19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.

Judges 13:20 For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

Q 4. When Manoah asks the angel if he is the same man that spoke to his wife, he uses another double entendre. He answers by saying "I am". v 11. Of course I am is the interpretation of God's name, YHWH, Jehovah, which means I am or I exist. By using these words, the angel makes himself a type of God. What is the title that Manoah gives to the type of God? Judges 13:22

Answer: God.

Judges 13:22 And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.

Q 5. Now, to Isaiah: Who is the subject of this prophecy written by Isaiah? Isaiah 9:1-7; Matthew 4:12-16

Answer: Jesus.

Isaiah 9:1 Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

Isaiah 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Isaiah 9:3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isaiah 9:4 For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

Isaiah 9:5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Matthew 4:12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

Matthew 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:

Matthew 4:14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

Matthew 4:15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

Matthew 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

Question 6. Jesus is not the person of God the Father, and there is no Trinity. However, He is the Son of God. In this passage, while being tempted by Satan, what does Jesus call Himself? Matthew 4:6, 7

Answer: God.

Matthew 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Matthew 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Conclusion: The angel of Judges 13 is wonderful, a counselor, and the mighty God. He is a type of Jesus in His future kingdom.
